A Tandem Journey through Berlin's calm corners.

Should you find yourself wandering through Berlin in search of a moment of calm, this guide is a reflection of the places that inspire us at Tandem. From green spaces to hidden cafés tucked between the city’s more familiar sights, these local spots offer a slower rhythm and a chance to pause. Carefully chosen, each place invites you to recharge and experience Berlin in a way that feels personal and grounding.

Die Tankstelle

Tucked behind high walls in a former gas station lies an idyllic space amid Berlin’s bustling landscape. Nestled among pine trees, bamboo, and a koi pond are Galerie Judin and Pace Gallery, accompanied by a café and a curated bookshop by Die Zeit. Known as Die Tankstelle, the site was originally built in the 1950s and, after two decades of closure, was rebuilt in 2008 under the direction of Juerg Judin. In 2009, it was awarded the Architekturpreis Berlin.

Wander through the contemporary art exhibitions, then enjoy a coffee before heading back into Berlin’s vibrant neighborhoods.

Landhausgarten Dr. Max Fraenkel

Nestled along the banks of the Havel, one of Berlin’s two rivers, this idyllic spot offers a peaceful escape with charming views of passing sailboats. The garden features a serene teahouse, a small wooded area, a tranquil pond, and a beautiful rose garden. Relax on the sunny terrace of the Sommercafé and enjoy coffee and cake in a picturesque setting.

Originally designed in the 1920s as the private garden of the Jewish Fraenkel family, the site holds a poignant history. In 1938, the family fled to Paris, and the garden was seized by the Third Reich. After 1945, the area was used for various purposes. Following careful restoration, it reopened to the public in 2016.

If you're exploring by bike or car, take the opportunity to visit the Sakrower Heilandskirche, just a 12-minute bike ride from the landscape garden. This picturesque waterside church, built in Italianate style, offers stunning views and a serene atmosphere.
